Gas plenum

Some manufacturers are using relatively low-pressure air (100 kPa, or 15 Ibfiin", instead of 690 kPa, or 100 Ibf/in") and are eliminating the venturi tubes for clean-gas induction. Others have eliminated the separate jet nozzles located at the individual bags and use a single jet to inject a pulse into the outlet-gas plenum. 

As a result, there is a growing trend to off-line clean reverse-pulse filters by using bags with multiple compartments. These sections allow the outlet-gas plenum serving a particular section to be closed off from the clean-gas exhaust, thereby stopping the flow of inlet gas. On the dirty-side of the tube sheet, the isolated section is separated by partitions from the neighboring sections where filtration continues. Sections of the filter are cleaned in rotation as with shaker and reverse-flow filters.

The fuel consists of a series of UN pellets that are total of 52 cm in length and 0.91 cm in diameter. These are capped by 5 cm of BeO to act as an axial reflector. There is a gas plenum on the top of the pin to allow for fission product gas build up. A layer of rhenium acts as a liner for the fuel pin to prevent interaction between the NblZr cladding and the UN pellets and also acts as a thermal neutron absorber in accident cases as discussed later. The NblZr end caps appear large in this Figure but their purpose is to simulate other components like the connectors that attach the fuel pin to a grid plate. 

During 1981-1984 period, average amount of argon supplied to the reactor cover gas plenum (CGP) was 4 10 nm /year, while during maintenance work period, from 2.5 to 68 m of air entered the circuit (evaluations were made on the basis of nitrogen content increase in the CGP). As a result of this, up to 6 kg/year of oxygen... 

These factors create prerequisites for impurities accumulation in the zones with limited mass transfer to the main sodium flow, namely surface of cover gas plenum of the reactor and possible stagnation zones. At the same time, corrosion products would deposit on the non-isothermal surfaces of the intermediate heat exchanger until the certain moment determined by the critical thickness of deposits layer. 

The most probable version is solid impurities deposition in the reactor cover gas plenum during the previous 7 years of the reactor operation. This supposition was confirmed by ...
