GAS PHASE GROWN CARBON FIBERS are CARBON FIBERS grown in an atmosphere of hydrocarbons with the aid of fine particulate solid catalysts such as iron or other transition metals and consisting of GRAPHITIZABLE CARBON. 

Note GAS PHASE GROWN CARBON FIBERS transform during GRAPHITIZATION HEAT TREATMENT into GRAPHITE FIBERS. The term vapor grown carbon fibers is also acceptable but, CVD fibers is not acceptable, as it also describes fibers grown by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process on substrate fibers.

Valuable contributions on VGCF are given in the book on Carbon Fibers Filaments and Composites [6] and Varshavskii [7] has reviewed the preparation of carbon fibers from the gas phase. The production of vapor grown carbon fibers is also described in the references [8-13]. The first commercial VGCF was produced by Nikkoso in 1991 and called Grasker.
