H-thymidine can be substituted by H-BrdU, or by thyimidine. In this latter case, scintillation counting is not required, and the solubilized cells—after TCA extraction—can be directly counted in a gamma counter. Of course, the use of as a label poses higher health hazards if not properly handled. 

The wells are cut out and counted in a gamma scintillation counter for the 30 and 60 keV peaks of 12SI (Micromedics gamma counter) to determine the antibody activity.

Figure 32-5 is a schematic of a well-type scintillation counter that is used for gamma-ray counting. I fere, the sample is contained in a small vial and placed in a cylindrical hole, or well, in the. scintillating crystal of the counter. 

Depending on the emitted radiation and measurement the methods that are used are gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry and measurements of p-activity (e.g. liquid scintillation counting). 

Protein adsorption studies were done by immersing polymer discs for 24 h in room-temperature solutions of radiolabeled gamma-globulin, albumin, and lysozyme. Standard scintillation counting methods were used to quantify the amount of protein bound to the polymer surfaces after a thorough rinse with physiological saline solution (0.9% aqueous NaCl).

Count the cell pellets (cell-associated binding) and the supernatants (membrane-associated binding) separately by gamma scintillation spectrometry.
