Fungistatic Procedures

Frmgistatic procedures demonstrate the ability of a biostabiliser to inhibit fungal germination (a.9). Tests such as ISO 846 part B (a.5) and JIS Z2911 (a. 10) use a buffered mineral salts agar but supplemented with a readily available carbon source in the form of glucose.

Test Method. There are several standard methods available to investigate the fungistatic activity of plastic materials (e.g. ISO 846, ASTM G21, ASTM E 1428). In the given study a method has been used which is not yet a standard test method but which is at the moment passing through the official procedure to become an ISO standard The NS A method. 

Nielson125 reports the synthesis of 7-((V-aIkylamino)- and T-(N,N-di-alkylamino)-l,3,5-triazaadamantanes by reductive alkylation of 94, which is obtained from 91 by an improved hydrogenation procedure (rhodium-charcoal catalyst, 25.5 psi). Paper chromatography54 and the Kovats indices and relative elution volumes of 1,3,5-triazaadamantane derivatives are measured.55 7-Amino-l,3,5-triazaadamantane is used as a vulcanization accelerator.127 7-(N,N-Dialkylamino)-l,3,5-triazaadamantanes are utilized as a new class of high-density fuel (DIADAM).128 Some 7-substituted 1,3,5-triazaadamantanes have bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity.129 7-Bromo-,... 

In analyzing the spectrum of a substance, one occasionally finds a band or a shoulder that is very difficult to interpret. This band may, upon further consideration, be found to be spurious, that is, it does not belong to the sample under analysis, but is caused by an instrumental effect, the method of handling the sample, or some unexpected phenomenon. For example, it has been pointed out (Inchiosa, 1965) that certain disposable syringes used in clinical and laboratory medicine yielded water-soluble extractives. One of these substances was identified as 2-(methylthio)ben-zothiazole, which has fungistatic and insecticidal activity. Such extractives or their reaction products could show up in the infrared spectrum during a laboratory procedure.
