Functionalization of marine materials for drug delivery systems

In this chapter, after mentioning briefly about the properties of the two major marine materials (chitosan and alginate) utilized in delivery systems, DDSs, especially hydrogels and nanosystems, designed for controlled release or targeted delivery will be described and application of these marine polymers in such systems will be reviewed. [Pg.110]

In order to obtain desired physicochemical properties such as solubility, hydro-philicity, bioadhesivity, as well as improved bioactive properties, numerous derivatives of chitosan such as trimethylated, carboxymethylated, thiolated, and PEGylated chitosans, have been designed by chemical modifications. [Pg.111]

Chloride salt of chitosan is included in the European Pharmacopeia and recently, the base chitosan has been included in the United States Pharmacopeia. [Pg.111]
