The term functional somatic syndrome sounds like the name of a disease, but it is not a disease. Arthur. Barsky and Jonathan F. Boms—the authorsofa major review-article of this illness in Annals of Internal Medicine, the offi-... [Pg.36]

The term functional somatic syndrome" Barsky and Borus explain, refers to several related syndromes that are characterized more by symptoms, suffering, and disability than by disease-specific, demonstrable abnormalities of structure and function. What are some functional somatic syndromes Multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic whiplash, the side effects of silicone... [Pg.36]

The clinical syndrome tends to follow a sequential pattern, with somatic symptoms presenting first, perceptual and mood changes next, and, finally, psychic changes, although there is considerable overlap between these phases (Table 1). Between the range of 1 to 16 Mg/kg, the severity of psychophysiologic effects of LSD in a given subject are proportional to the dose (30). Specific types of reaction, such as paranoid ideation, are more likely a matter of personal predisposition than a function of dose. [Pg.18]

Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, delayed sleep-phase syndrome (DSPS), and insomnia can cause problem sleepiness and difficulty functioning during the day for adolescents (103). Over the course of several studies, Roberts and colleagues have shown that insomnia and related sleep problems have adverse consequences for the future functioning of adolescents (107,108). In particular, insomnia symptoms such as nonrestorative sleep, difficulty initiating sleep, and daytime sleepiness predicted self-esteem difficulties, interpersonal relationship problems, and symptoms of depression, along with somatic complaints (108). [Pg.161]

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects up to 15% of the U.S. population. Patients may complain of a variety of symptoms, the most characteristic of which is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements. IBS appears to result from a varying combination of disturbances in visceral motor and sensory function, often associated with significant affective disorders. The disturbances in bowel function can be either constipation or diarrhea or both at different times. Considerable evidence suggests a specific enhancement of visceral (as opposed to somatic) sensitivity to noxious, as well as physiological stimuh in this syndrome. [Pg.644]
