Numerous studies have demonstrated the irr5)ortance of functional genomics in LAB research. In 2002, Jansen et al. (2002) identified a novel family of repetitive DNA sequences, present among both domains of the prokaryotes (Archaea and Bacteria), but absent from eukaryotes or viruses.
