The second PPS process practiced commercially was developed by Kureha Chemical Industry Company. Kureha has built a commercial PPS plant in Nishiki, Fukushima (46), and has formed a joint venture, Fortron Industries, with Hoechst Celanese (47). Fortron Industries has completed a commercial PPS plant at Hoechst Celanese s plant in Wilmington, North Carolina. Fortron Industries represents the only other PPS producer in North America. Figure 3 shows a flow diagram for the Kureha PPS process. [Pg.444]

RUZICKA - FUKUSHIMA Rearrangement Base or acid catalyzed rearrangement of I7a-hydroxy-20-keto steroids to 0-tiomo steroids. [Pg.329]

The stereochemistry of reduction of 20-ketones with LiAlH4 is more influenced by substituents than that of other ketones. Usually reduction of the 20-ketone gives the more hindered -alcohol.208 stated that when C-17 has a substituent, the reduction yields almost quantitatively the 20)5-ol. However, the evidence on this point is conflicting Fukushima and Meyer claim that with a 17a-hydroxy present the 20a-ol is the predominant product except when an 11-ketone is being reduced simultaneously. Other results appear to support this conclusion, but... [Pg.77]
