Fuel-resistant bitumens

Bitumens that are resistant to fuels and oils are specially modified bitumens and are available under patented trade names. With the modification, the bitumen does not lose any of the required properties for the production of a satisfactory bituminous mixture. It should be stated that today s fuel-resistant bitumens are not tar-based bitumens. 

Asphalts with fuel-resistant bitumen are used in places where fuel leaks are expected (airport aprons, gas stations, parking areas, etc.).

Bitumens for filling joints and cracks in pavements of roads, airports, parking places and other trafficked areas are specially modified bitumens, so as to resist thermal tensile and compressive stresses developed as a result of temperature changes. At the same time, they possess excellent resistance to permanent deformation. Depending on the additives incorporated in the bitumen, these modified bitumens can also be fuel resistant.

Properties and Uses. Thoroughly dried films of bitumen paints are resistant to water, salt solutions, dilute acids, and alkalis. Extended paints are weather resistant. On account of the thermoplasticity of bitumen, resistance decreases with increasing temperature. Bitumen paints are not resistant to organic solvents, fuels, oils, and greases. Optimally formulated bitumen paints are nontoxic and may therefore be used to protect surfaces that come into contact with drinking water. 

When PA is to be used in airfields, it is required to also determine the following (a) resistance to fuels, (b) resistance to de-icing fluids and (c) bitumen-aggregate affinity.
