Runge first isolated catechins (i.e., epicatechin) (22) from Acacia catechu in 1821 but it wasn t until the 1920s that Freudenberg made progress in the elucidation of the structures of these compounds (115, 377). Their general constitution as 5,7,3, 4 -flavan-3-ols was not established until 1925 (115). The absolute stereochemistry of catechin and epicatechin was finally established by Birch et al. (22) and Hardegger et al. (131) in 1957. [Pg.587]

Catechin was aerobically subjected to an oxidative coupling by plant polyphenol oxidase (PPO) to give polymers [35], whose analytical properties were similar to those obtained by autoxidation with hydrogen peroxide [36] and to tannins extracted from Acacia catechu. The main reaction sequence involves formation of o-quinone, followed by the coupUng of this unstable intermediate. [Pg.56]

Cutch, Cutechu Acacia Catechu The dye stuff known as Cutch or Cutechu is an extract usually made from the heat wood of Acacia Catechu, a small thorny tree. It yields orange-brown dyes that are rich in tannins, and was used in India calico printing before its introduction to West. It is used mainly to dye cotton and silk. [Pg.55]

Salter (1869) hsts catechu brown(s) prepared from extracts of Acacia catechu L. Various salts were used to give a range of colours from greenish brown (iron), brownish yellow (tin) and brick coloured (lead) copper acetate and potassium bichromate gave brown residues. These were apparently speculative pigments although another brown prepared from catechn bark is recorded that was recommended for painting if not too thinly applied . [Pg.88]

Cutch is a tannin and dye obtained from the heartwood of Acacia catechu (L.f) Willd., a leguminous tree native to India, Myanmar and other regions in southern Asia. Its active contents are cat-echutarmic acid (25-35%), catechin (2-10%), quercetin q.vl), and catechu red or brown (Schweppe, 1992 Roberts and Etherington, 2003). While primarily used to produce a fast dye with shades varying between brown, olive and khaki, a pigment based on this extract called Catechu brown (. v.) is described by Salter (1869). [Pg.137]

Pyro-catechinol, i-2-Di-hydro3iy Benzene.—The ortho-di-hydroxy benzene is known as pyro-catechinol or pyro-catechin. The first name is preferable as the termination ol indicates its phenol character. Its name also indicates its relation to a resin known as catechu, obtained from an acacia tree. On distillation it yields the phenol, the prefix pyro meaning heat. It is also present in the dry distillation products of wood, coal or bituminous shale. Various plant materials such as resins and the leaves of ampelopsis yield it by alkali fusion. It is also associated with phenol as a sulphuric acid ester in the urine of horses. [Pg.617]
