Stable Cu(i) complexes of tetraaza macrocycles are able to be generated in oxygen-free aprotic solvents (Palmer, Papaconstantinou Endicott, 1969 Olson Vasilevskis, 1971). In aqueous solvents there is a tendency for such species to decompose via loss of ligand (Freiberg, Meyerstein Yamamoto, 1982).
