This is not to say that the American commitment to South Vietnam under Kennedy was insubstantial he increased the number of American military advisers, logistic units, and pilots from about 700 to 16,700. The radically expanded commitment in economic, military, and prestige terms formed a crucial basis for Johnson s decisions in 1965.
