Free-Radical Chain Chlorination of 1-Chlorobutane

Purpose To perform a free-radical chain reaction and determine relative reactivities of C-H bonds toward chlorine atoms. [Pg.317]

Be certain that all connections in your apparatus are tight prior to heating the reaction mixture and that your gas trap is functioning to prevent venting of noxious gases into the laboratory. [Pg.317]

Carbon dioxide is generated in the separatory funnel when the reaction mixture is washed with aqueous sodium carbonate. To relieve any gas pressure that develops, be sure to vent the funnel frequently when shaking it. [Pg.317]

Preparation Sign in at www.cengage.com/login to answer Pre-Lab Exercises, access videos, and read the MSDSs for the chemicais used or produced in this procedure. Review Sections 2.11, 2.14, 2.21, 2.22, 2.23, 2.25, 2.28, and 6.4. [Pg.317]

Apparatus A dry 25-mL round-bottom fiask, gas trap, separatory funnei, apparatus for magnetic stirring, heating under refiux, and flameless heating. [Pg.317]
