Free flowing materials

Stored Free-Flowing Material. It is practicahy impossible to representatively sample stationary free-flowing powder because of the severe segregation that has almost certainly occurred. If there is no alternative but to sample this material, several samples should be taken and analyzed separately, so that an estimate can be made of the rehabhity of the measured parameter. On a reciprocating conveyor, material is carried forward in a horizontal direction by frictional contact with the trough. Inertia causes the material to be left in that position as the trough is quickly returned to the initial position. These conveyors are useful for handling granular free-flowing materials with a minimum of attrition.

Screens in this group are iisiiallv used from 0,013 rn (V2 in) to 60 mesh. Some light free-flowing materials, hovv ever, can be separated at 200 to 300 mesh. Silk cloths are often used.

Table 21-28 gives dimensions of hopper cars and other cars typically used in the chemical industiy. Vacuum-pressure systems are used most frequently for unloading covered hopper cars. For certain free-flowing materials, in both covered and open-top hopper cars, shakeout devices are useful. 

Another system is the plug pulse system seen in Fig. 11. The discharge valve is alternatively activated with a gas pulse. This system works well for free flowing materials. The minipot is a variation of the plug pulse system The operation of the minipot is depicted in Fig. 12.

An alternate design has fixed jacketed trays for indirect heating. Scrapers attached to the central shaft drop the material from tray to tray. Like the rotating tray equipment, this equipment is limited to free flowing materials, but has the advantage of being essentially dust free. 

Incompatible Mixtures. Even at very low levels, many of the poly-ether additives led to incompatible mixtures. These blends were not successfully milled to a smooth sheet under any conditions tried. Instead, a mass of crumbs was obtained. These crumbs could be molded into a coherent mass, but the physical properties were poor. For example, addition of 8.75 parts of polybutene-1 oxide to Masterbatch B for CPVC alone gave a brittle, free-flowing material with these properties notched Izod impact strength, 0.7 lb/in notch, flow rate 452 g/10 min. This is a particularly interesting result, since PBO has the same chemical formula as PTHF but structurally is a substituted ethylene oxide polymer rather than a linear homopolymer. No further studies were made of such blends.
