Frank mechanism

In the 45 years since its proposal, Frank s autocatalytic mechanism (Section 11.3, above) has spawned numerous theoretical refinements including consideration of such factors as reversibility, racemization, environmental noise, and parity-violating energy differences. [100,101] In contrast to the above examples of stereospecific autocatalysis by the SRURC, however, none of these theoretical refinements is supported by experimental evidence. While earlier attempts to validate the Frank mechanism for the autocatalytic amplification of small e.e.s in other experimental systems have generally been unsuccessful, several recent attempts have shown more promising results. It will be recalled that the Frank mechanism [68] deals with isovolumetric contraction, while Patterson and Starling s observations [69] focus on the ejecting ventricle. In some materials, semiconductors in particular, interstitial atoms play a crucial role in diffusion. Thus, Frank and Turnbull (1956) proposed that copper atoms dissolved in germanium are present both substitutionally (together with vacancies) and interstitially, and that the vacancies and interstitial copper atoms diffuse independently. Such diffusion can be very rapid, and this was exploited in preparing the famous micrograph of Figure 3.14 in the preceding chapter. Similarly, it is now recognised that transition metal atoms dissolved in silicon diffuse by a very fast, predominantly interstitial, mechanism (Weber 1988).

Acute exposure to large amounts of endosulfan results in frank effects manifested as hyperactivity, muscle tremors, ataxia, and convulsions. In the setting of a sustained loss of myocardium, a number of mechanisms aid the heart when faced with an increased hemodynamic burden and reduced CO. They include the following the Frank-Starling mechanism, tachycardia and increased afterload, and cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling (Table 3-2).5,7...
