U.S. imports of calcium metals fluctuate greatiy. Since the mid-1980s, the avadabiHty of very low priced calcium metal from China and the CIS has led to substantial reductions in calcium production by Western producers. This has been compensated to a certain extent by an increase in sales of processed materials, ie, alloys and particulates, by the Western companies. In 1991, more than 700 tons of calcium metal were imported to the United States from the People s RepubHc of China. Significant quantities of calcium alloys and particulates have also been imported from France and Canada. [Pg.401]

A major element of energy policy in leading industrial countries such as the United States, Germany, Britain, Japan, and France has been provision of substantial aid to existing energy industries. Part of the... [Pg.1103]

Worldwide the food situation is worsening. Only five nations (Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, and the United States) export substantial quantities of grains. Further, during recent years grain deficits have escalated in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East (5),... [Pg.310]

A substantial proportion of this sort of bread made in France is now made in plant bakeries. The same sort of social forces are pushing French people to one-stop shopping as are operating in the UK. [Pg.181]

The neuropsychiatric tradition goes back to the formerly unified disciplines of psychiatry and neurology. It remains influential in Germany and has been a significant feature in psychiatric research in France, Italy, and many Eastern European countries. This tradition has more recently been extended in some countries to embrace substantial contributions from neuropsychology (Remschmidt and van Engeland, 1999b). [Pg.746]

Substantial evidence supports the theory that psychotic depression represents a distinct type of major depression (Schatzberg and Rothschild 1992). Statistically significant differences between psychotic and nonpsychotic major depression have been noted along many axes, including presenting features (Coryell et al. 1984 Frances et al. 1981 Classman and Roose 1981 Lykouras et al. 1986 J. C. Nelson and Bowers 1978), biology (Carroll et al. 1976a Coryell et al. 1982 Rihmer et al. 1984 Rudorfer et al. 1982), familial transmission (Leckman et al. 1984 W. H. Nelson et al. 1984), course of illness (D. G. Robinson and Spiker 1985), and response to treatment (Chan et al. 1987 Classman and Roose 1981 Kantor and Classman 1977 J. C. Nelson and Bowers 1978 Rothschild 1985). [Pg.305]

Prior to the events of 1986-87, a substantial effort in the solid state chemistry of simple and complex copper oxides had been established in France. As early as 1980, structural chemists at Caen, under the direction of Michel and Raveau, studied the synthesis and structure of several ternary, quaternary, and multinary Cu-O compounds. [Pg.71]

Opiates abuse is basically stable or declining in West and Central Europe. The annual prevalence rate remained close to 0.5 per cent of the population aged 15-64 (1.5 million people). Major opiates markets in Western Europe are the United Kingdom (some 350,000 persons) and Italy (300,000), followed by France (170,000), Germany (120,000) and Spain (70,000). Data for Spain suggest that opiates abuse has declined in recent years. These data are derived from problem drug use estimates. Household survey results in all of the countries mentioned above show substantially lower figures (with prevalence rates typically around 0.2%). Household surveys, however, may not provide the optimal measure of the number of opiates abusers as many heroin addicts do not have a fixed or permanent residence. [Pg.55]

Leblanc s process, 1b substantially that practised in Great Britain at the present day. Its introduction into this country was, however, effectually prevented until a considerable period after it began to be adopted in France, by the enormously high duty imposed upon salt, amounting, from the year 1805 until about 1822,... [Pg.920]
