Powerful groups like American Corn Products and France s Roquette Freres produce starchy matters in this way. The former is also the leading producer of isoglucose (a blend of glucose and fructose) in the United States, while the latter is the largest producer of sorbitol. Starch can, therefore, compete directly with saccharose both for foodstuffs and for industrial uses as a fermentation or enzyme-reaction base. 

The two main production areas for corn grain in old Europe are France and Italy (Table 5.2). In fact, the major reason for the expansion in the total area cultivated within the European Union over the last 40 years has been the continued popularity of the crop in France (Figure 5.2).

The availability of these residues depends on regional agricultural productions and on the commitment of agricultural cooperatives in favour of agromaterials. For instance, in France, at present, there are corn crops dedicated exclusively to the fabrication of thermoplastic agromaterials. 

Geographical variation in male response also appears to be documented in the noctuid Agrotis segetum. The attractant components Z5-10 Ac, Z7-12 Ac and Z9-14 Ac and their blends that evoke male catch appear to differ in Denmark, Switzerland, France and Hungary (Arn et al., 1982). Geographical differences in pheromone production and response occur in Ostrinia nubilalis, the European corn borer, and will be considered in Section 13.3.6.
