Founding the Nederlandsche Chemische Vereeniging NCV

Just before these clashes between Delft and the universities intensified, two former students of van t Hoff and a chemical engineer who had studied at Delft sent a circular letter to at least 600 chemical practitioners in the Netherlands. The circular summarized a draft version of the by-laws of a nationwide chemical society which they intended to establish, and contained an appeal to visit a meeting which would be held in The Hague on 15th April 1903.  [Pg.199]

When the Scheikundig Jaarboekje was published, in late 1898 or early 1899, it contained a list with no less than 650 names. Next to Jorissen and Rutten, three other editors had helped in preparing the book B. A. van Ketel, a pharmacist, bacteriologist and chemist who had studied at the University of Amsterdam, [Pg.199]

A completely different approach was put forward by Vosmaer, who in August 1902 returned to his old ideal of 1897 to found a chemical section within the engineering society KIVI. In his view, no separate chemical society should be founded at all, but both chemists and chemical engineers should be united under the KIVI umbrella.  [Pg.201]

As a result of their mutual consensus on a broad chemical society, Jorissen, Reicher and Rutten drafted a proposal which contained the basic principles of the scope, aims and working rules of the new society, and sent this text in 1902 to all professors of chemistry and pharmacy of the four Dutch universities and the Polytechnic College. When in November 1902 these draft statutes were made public for the first time - in the Tijdschrift - Jorissen and his friends clearly tried to enrol the joint group of professors for their purposes. Until now , they wrote, we received replies from all [professors], except two, with remarks and comments, as solicited. From these rephes it appeared to us, that in general there is sympathy for our plan among the professors.  [Pg.201]
