Fossils, age

In our journey from the fossil age to the sustainable age, we will enter the transition period, where conventional technology will exist side by side with sustainable technology. Hybrid technology will become increasingly more popular. The transition period will most certainly make use of conventional... [Pg.344]

A further important use of El mass spectrometry lies in measuring isotope ratios, which can be used in estimating the ages of artifacts, rocks, or fossils. Electron ionization affects the isotopes of any one element equally, so that the true isotope ratio is not distorted by the ionization step. Further information on isotopes can be found in Chapter 46. [Pg.16]

Where replacement of pretreatment and purification equipment is required, RO is often the technology of choice to supplant softeners, dealkalizers, and demineralization units, whether the boiler is a 100 psig unit for HVAC, an aging 1,000 MW fossil-fuel power plant, or a 2,000+ MW supercritical supplying power and district heat. [Pg.361]

Acid deposition has been known to exist since early in the industrial age. The principle pollutants responsible for the elevated levels of acidity are the oxidized forms of sulphur and nitrogen that have been emitted as by-products from non-ferrous smelters, fossil-fueled power generating stations, and motor vehicles. The pollutants are transported substantial distances from the source areas by the atmosphere. They are deposited on receptor regions remote from the sources as acidic rain, snow, and fog or as gasses and dry particulates. [Pg.36]

Early students of the origin of life were misled because they believed that Earth was very young, in part because no methods were available for dating ancient events. Today, suitable methods exist for determining the age of materials that are billions of years old, and the fossil record of ancient organisms has vastly improved. The evolution of living organisms... [Pg.29]

Figure 3.2. 8 C values of fossil browser apatites plotted against age for sites including Die Kelders, Klasies River Mouth I, Sterkfontein and Makapansgat. Enamel is represented by solid squares, bone apatite by solid circles. The mean value standard deviation for modem browsers, represented by dashed lines, has been shifted by +1.5%o as described in the text. Adapted from Lee-Thorp and van der Merwe (1987). The district is composed of sedimentary rocks of the pre-Paleogene Shimanto Supergroup (dominantly shale and sandstone) and Quaternary andesitic and dacitic volcanic rocks. The Shimanto Supergroup is comprised of shale, sandstone and their alternations. Although no fossil data are available, the age of sedimentation is thought to be middle to upper Cretaceous age from its lithology (Izawa et al., 1990). The Shimanto... [Pg.184]

The Onnagawa Formation conformably overlies the Nishikurosawa Formation and is composed of siliceous shale and shale. The rocks are characterized by organic-rich laminated diatomaceous deposits, siliceous microfossils, and fish bones, while foraminiferal fossil is poor in amounts. The total thickness is about 3(X) m. The age of base of the Onnagawa Formation is estimated to be 12.9 Ma based on diatoms (Koizumi and Matoba, 1989). The age of the top of the Formation is 5.8 Ma. [Pg.215]
