Primary pollutants emitted mainly as a result of human activity (including fossil-fuel combustion, biomass burning, and land-use) include RH, CO, and nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2). Reactive free radicals or atoms are in two categories the very reactive species, such as 0( D) and OH, and the less reactive ones, such as HO2, 0( P), NO, and NO2. [Pg.1920]

Fossil fuel combustion. Fossil fuel combustion is another major source of CO2. Carbon is one of the main elements in fossil fuels, and is converted to CO2 when fossil fuels combust. Petroleum (oil), natural gas, and coal are the main fossil fuels consumed by humans. Electricity generation, industrial production, and the use of internal combustion engines are the primary activities that burn fossil fuels and thereby generate CO2. [Pg.67]

Similar to SO, NO, are also important fuel cell contaminants. NO, derive from several sources [104-106]. The primary sources are motor vehicles, electrical utilities, and other industrial, commercial, and residential sources that burn fuels.
