A few years later, I returned to the Haight and conducted a televised interview with Dr. David Smith. He had started the Free Clinic, but I never really got to know him while I was working there. The 1973 interview was for a course on drug and alcohol abuse I was preparing for the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston. David and I did not become truly acquainted at that time, however, and did not meet again until another five years had passed. Then we quickly became good friends. 

I was selected to head up the Department of Behavioral Science at the Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. PresidentNixon was just beginning to implement his War on Drugs. The psychiatric consultant to the Surgeon General seemed to think I was the right one to develop courses for future drug specialists and counselors. 

Starting in June 1971, my professional life ehanged and the years at Edgewood Arsenal were soon left far behind. Until October 1973 I was at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, designing and teaching courses in substance abuse and psychopharmacology. As Chief of the Behavioral Science Department, I watched its roster swell from 35 when I arrived to almost 100 a year later.

When Pershing returned from Mexico, there was some concern that marihuana had infiltrated the American ranks, although an official inquiry failed to turn up any proof to that effect. However, in 1921, the commandant of Fort Sam Houston expressly forbade marihuana anywhere on the grounds of the military post, ostensibly because American soldiers were smoking the drag while on duty.
