It was not until the twentieth century that furfural became important commercially. The Quaker Oats Company, in the process of looking for new and better uses for oat hulls found that acid hydrolysis resulted in the formation of furfural, and was able to develop an economical process for isolation and purification. In 1922 Quaker announced the availability of several tons per month. The first large-scale appHcation was as a solvent for the purification of wood rosin. Since then, a number of furfural plants have been built world-wide for the production of furfural and downstream products. Some plants produce as Httie as a few metric tons per year, the larger ones manufacture in excess of 20,000 metric tons. [Pg.75]

By the immediate first current zero it is assumed that the contacts have travelled sufficiently apart to achieve the required deionization and have built up adequate dielectric strength to withstand at least 0.95 V, . If the circuit does not interrupt at the immediate current zero at a which is so near to the point of chopping Vt , the interruption will take place only by the next current zero at point h and result in another 260 strikes by then. To study more accurate behaviour of an intenupter, with the number of restrikes and the formation of the actual transient voltage waveforms on current chopping, oscillograms similar to those during a short-circuit test may be obtained (Section 14.3.6). [Pg.648]

The telluride halides crystallize in monoclinic lattices, but only In-TeBr and InTel are isotypic 162). InTeCl forms a layer type of structure, as do InSCl and its analogs, but, owing to the size of the Te atom and the enhanced covalency of the In-Te bond, only a coordination number of 4 for indium is realized. The structure is built up of strongly distorted, InTesraCli/j tetrahedra that share the corners and edges occupied by Te atoms. The Cl atoms are coordinated to one tetrahedron each, and do not take part in the layer formation 324, 325). [Pg.388]

The high catalytic activity of enzymes has a number of sources. Every enzyme has a particular active site configured so as to secure intimate contact with the substrate molecule (a strictly defined mutual orientation in space, a coordination of the electronic states, etc.). This results in the formation of highly reactive substrate-enzyme complexes. The influence of tfie individual enzymes also rests on the fact that they act as electron shuttles between adjacent redox systems. In biological systems one often sees multienzyme systems for chains of consecutive steps. These systems are usually built into the membranes, which secures geometric proximity of any two neighboring active sites and transfer of the product of one step to the enzyme catalyzing the next step. [Pg.585]

The metal nuclei of the so-called full-shell clusters, also referred to as magic number clusters, generally exhibit hexagonal or cubic close packing (ccp). Figure 6 shows the stepwise formation of the first magic-number clusters built by 13, 55, 147, and 309 atoms. [Pg.26]

If the chain was not cross-linked the new conformation was built with the same number of cross-linkages fj-lj and so on up to the cross-link formation. The time between formation of two consequent cross-linkages was determined as... [Pg.29]

In an increasingly impressive number of examples, some ligands which are built up around metal ions can be freed subsequently from their controlling metals to provide a new aspect to organic synthesis. Such a synthetic strategy enables the formation of polyfunctional compounds and is increasingly being used for its stereochemical ability to offer stereoselectivity. [Pg.156]
