Footballs, high-performance

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a variant of the simple column technique, based on the discovery that chromatographic separations are vastly improved if the stationary phase is made up of very small, uniformly sized spherical particles. Small particle size ensures a large surface area for better adsorption, and a uniform spherical shape allows a tight, uniform packing. In practice, specially prepared and coated silica microspheres of 10-25 /j.m size are often used. Only 15 g of these microspheres have a surface area the size of a football field ... [Pg.467]

A syntactic foam produced by mixing a polyurethane compound with millions of tiny gas-filled microspheres has been used for high-performance footballs. Developed by the sports company Adidas and Bayer, the foam makes up the top one-third of the outer skin of the footballs. When a football is kicked, the microspheres restore its shape very quickly, producing a very high elastic recovery compared with other football constructions, with the effect that the ball deviates very little from its initial flight path. [Pg.182]

A 17-year-old high school football player started to take ephedrine to enhance his performance and increase his energy levels during football games. [Pg.68]

These saints work a lot harder and deserve to get paid a lot more for the miracles they perform on a daily basis. The average salary for professional athletes is 650,000. That s more than ten times what the average public high school principal makes. Basketball players can earn millions in just one season, and football players can earn hundreds of thousands for just a 30-second commercial. Even benchwarmers make more in a month than teachers make. [Pg.38]

Others managed at his place of work. He noted that many did not seem to share his own highly conscientious approach and yet he had never concluded that they were failing in their jobs. Patrick acknowledged that he held double standards, such as encouraging colleagues to take adequate lunch breaks, when he felt he should lead others by example. He also realized that he was happy to adopt a lower standard outside of work for his own performance on the football field and at social events. [Pg.128]

Engineered high-impact acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) blends (see Figure 10.8) afford a medium degree of impact performance for helmet shells that is sufficient for moderate intensity impact and high-to-medium repetitive impact scenarios. Contemporary sport helmets with ABS outer shells include the youth and amateur levels of American football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, ice hockey, cricket, equestrian, alpine sports, and action adventure sports. Similar to PC helmet... [Pg.218]

Sport helmet systems are expected to deteriorate over time. In fact, the known reduction in protective capacity of the American football helmet system has led to an accepted restorative process throughout the industry. The pursuit to maintain the initial performance standard of American football helmets and efforts to mitigate the high-prevalence sports-related concussion have prompted the implementation of a certified reconditioning and recertification process. [Pg.235]

In addition, the examination of a professional athlete s moves and gestures during a game can lead to better understand of the way the sport s footwear and accessories affect their performance. As an example, a methodology has been recentiy developed to analyze the way the design of the football (soccer) boots affects the performance of an inside kick [1]. The use of high-speed video cameras, the appUcation of different pressures on the boots, and software analysis were included in the system. [Pg.134]

The notion of taking more risks to compensate for lower risk perception certainly seems intuitive. I bet every reader has experienced this phenomenon. I clearly remember taking more risks after donning a standard high school football uniform. With helmet and shoulder pads, I would willingly throw my body in the path of another player or leap to catch a pass. I did not perform these behaviors until perceiving security from the personal protective equipment (PPE). [Pg.81]
