Food allergy diagnostic tests

The rational selection and interpretation of diagnostic tests require an appreciation for the utility of the tests themselves and evaluation of the level of certainty required for the diagnosis of food allergy (Chapman et al., 2006). [Pg.143]

Cytotoxicity tests are based on allergen-induced lysis of peripheral blood leucocytes from food allergic patients. The degree of cytotoxicity is usually evaluated by visual examination. The test appears to be reproducible on a single occasion, but the results vary markedly from day to day even in the same patient. The test remains of dubious diagnostic value. These controversial techniques have been reviewed in American Academy of Allergy position statements (Reisman, 1981). [Pg.13]
