University of Wisconsin and R.L. Pigford to the University of Delaware. Charles Lapple and Mars Fontana both went to Ohio State. Fred Kurata came to Kansas from Atlas Powder Company in 1947 and S. M. Walas from Stone and Webster in 1948. These four men (Maloney, Miller, Kurata and Walas) who constituted the Kansas staff all had Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering and all of them had at least four years of industrial experience. They formed a stable department for almost a decade. Miller left in 1955 to become chairman of the department at the University of Rochester.
