Fomblin fluids

Perfluoropolyethers have found widespread use as high-performance lubricants and several companies manufacture a range of these materials (Krytox , Du Pont Fomblin , Montefluos Demnum , Daikin). The Fomblin fluids and Krytox require the use of fluorine in the finishing stages [81] whilst Demnum is synthesised by polymerisation of the fluorooxetane 16 followed by per-fluorination using fluorine (Fig. 27) [82]. 

This fluorocarbon ether oxygen identifies the material present on the surface as Fomblin and indicates that this fluid has penetrated to the extent of at least 10 nm into the surface.

Also, intermediate peroxides are formed in the oxidation of perfluorinated alkenes, e.g. in the photo-oxidation of perfluoroethene and perfluoropropene for the formation of Fomblin (Ausimont Co.) perfluoro-polyether fluids [198, 199].

The process was brought to a commercial level with the Italian Montedison ( Fomblin perfluoroether fluids). Further perfluorinated carbon chain modifications to manufacture any required kind of fluorocarbon surfactants encounter no much difficulties.
