Follicle, small intestine

The main site of the mucosal immune system in the gut is referred to as gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), which can be divided into inductive and effector sites. In the small intestine, the inductive sites are in the Peyer s patches, which consist of large lymphoid follicles in the terminal small intestine. The contact with external antibodies triggers a series of cascade events in the body based on immune response (Brandtzaeg et al., 1999). [Pg.249]

Membranous epithelial M cells are a part of the organized mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (O-MALT). These cells are specialized for antigen sampling. Also, they are exploited as a route of invasion by several pathogens.39 M cells are concentrated in follicle-associated epithelial (FAE) tissue called Peyer s patches in the small intestine. As M cells carry out endocytotic transport, they can be potential vehicles for mucosal drug and vaccine delivery. [Pg.51]

Roughly 30 Bcl-2 family members are currently known. These proteins play tissue-specific as well as signal pathway-specific roles in regulating apoptosis. The tissue-specificity is overlapping. For example, Bcl-2 is expressed in hair follicles, kidney, small intestines, neurons, and the lymphoid system, whereas Bcl-x is expressed in the nervous system and hematopoietic cells. [Pg.330]

There was hyperemia of the intestine, particularly in the large intestine. Ulcers developed in the lymphoid follicles of the walls and sometimes led to perforation (Fig. 40). The cells of the epithelium became atrophic, the process starting as small atrophic foci which eventually spread and covered... [Pg.74]
