Folate Folic Acid, Folacin

It is found in liver yeast, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, avocados, legumes, and many raw vegetables. [Pg.614]

Folic Acid (Folacin Pteroylglutamic Acid Folate)... [Pg.62]

Folacin bioavailability varies among the vitamers (120,125). Folic acid is more readily available than the naturally occurring food folates but may be less available from fortified foods than in aqueous solution or tablet form. Food folates have been reported to be 30-80% as available as folic acid. Folacin availability, absorption, and metabolism were recently reviewed (20,120,122). [Pg.440]

Folacin (=folate, =folic acid) is a precursor of THF (tetrahydrofolate), a 1-carbon donor in many Bio-chemistiyland reactions. THF comes in a variety of activated (extra caibon-bearing) forms, each of which is capable of donating one carbon under certain conditions (fig. 9.3). Activated THFs contribute methyl groups in the formation of purines and thymine (figs. 5.4, 7.1), and hence THF is important for DNA synthesis. Also ... [Pg.43]

Folate (folic acid and folacin) is a water-soluble B vitamin that is necessary in forming coenzymes for purine and pyrimidine synthesis, erythropoiesis, and methionine regeneration. [Pg.528]

Folate (Folacin, Folic Acid). Ohio State University Extension Fact Sheet. [Pg.324]

Recommended Dietary Allowances, 10th ed., 1989, NRC-National Academy of Sciences, p. 285. ihe RDA are expressed in terms of "total" folacin, that is, the amount of folic acid activity available from all food folates. [Pg.376]
