Fluorinated siloxane

The exchange reactions between fluorophosphoranes and silane derivatives have been utilized for the fluorination of alcohols, via their trimethylsilyl ethers (89). > According to one of these reports, the alkyl fluoride is generally accompanied by olefin. Phosphorus penta-fluoride similarly fluorinates siloxanes such as (90). ... [Pg.69]

Siuzdak and coworkers have recently introduced another nanoscale methodology which advances the capabilities of desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, termed nanostructure initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) [51]. NIMS consists of a nanostructured surface composed of roughly 10-nm pores with initiator materials such as fluorinated siloxanes embedded within the structure. The analyte is adsorbed to the NIMS surface. Subsequent laser irradiation results in a rapid surface heating that causes the initiator to vaporize from the clathrates, which in turn desorbs the analyte [51]. This approach allows the analysis not only of small molecules but also of large molecules, including peptides and proteins, unlike DIOS-MS. The device used for sample preparation via spray deposition, as weU as representative spectra of vitamin D3 and testosterone, are shown in Figure 9.4 [52]. [Pg.377]

TFBB) and the dianhydiide 6FDA were coupled with 20wt% DBPDMS to synthesize highly fluorinated siloxane-grafted copolyimide [79]. Scheme 6.21 shows a representative structure of the polyimide grafted with siloxane moiety with 6FDA as dianhydride unit. [Pg.292]

To avoid contamination effects, it is a good idea to select liquids with a low surface tension. A possible choice is the PDMS/fluoroalkylsiloxane pair (the latter is a fluorinated derivative of PDMS). These two liquids are immiscible. PDMS, which happens to be lighter, does not wet the fluorinated siloxane. [Pg.28]

The presence of carbon—fluorine bonds in organic polymers is known to characteristically impart polymer stabiUty and solvent resistance. The poly(fluorosibcones) are siloxane polymers with fluorinated organic substituents bonded to siUcon. Poly(fluorosibcones) have unique appHcations resulting from the combination provided by fluorine substitution into a siloxane polymer stmcture (see Silicon compounds, silicones). [Pg.399]

It has been well recognized that the hydrolysis of alkoxysilanes and chlorosilanes is effectively catalyzed when fluoride anions are present due to formation of hypercoordinated silicon intermediates.803 More in-depth studies by Bassindale et al. showed that the reaction of PhSi(OEt)3 with stoichiometric amounts of Bu4NF surprisingly yields an encapsulation complex, namely tetrabutylammonium octaphenyloctasilsesquioxane fluoride 830, in which the fluorine atom is situated inside the cubic siloxane cage (Scheme 114). The Si--F distance of average 2.65 A is shorter than the sum of van der Waals radii (3.57 A), which renders the coordination number of the silicon atoms at [4+1]. [Pg.485]

While the nature of the material is important, the surface of the material is also often critical. The human body wants to wrap around or connect to bodies within its domain. In some cases, the desired situation is little or no buildup on the polymer. Here, surface slickness is needed. Siloxanes and fluorinated materials such as PTFE are generally slick materials, but other materials can be made slick through surface treatments that present to the body few voids and irregularities at the atomic level. In other cases, body buildup, and surfaces and materials that assist this growth are preferred. Surface hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity, presence or absence of ionic groups, and chemical and physical (solid or gel) surfaces are all important considerations as one designs a material for a specific application. [Pg.596]

Since isobutylene is a very reactive olefin, its oligomerization can be promoted by almost any electrophilic catalyst. More recently fluorinated alumina,6 cation-exchange resins,7 benzylsulfonic acid siloxane,8 pentasil zeolites,9 and perfluori-nated resinosulfonic acids10 were studied. Some of these catalysts may bring about improved oligomerization. [Pg.725]

The importance of stabilizers for SCF polymerization was briefly outlined in Section 9.1.4. The drawback with existing stabilizers, however, is that most of them are based on fluorocarbons or siloxanes, which are high-cost chemicals. Cheaper polymeric stabilizers are usually only soluble in SCCO2 at pressures too high to make viable their widespread use. Very recently, Beckman and co-workers reported [68] a totally new approach to the problem polymers were prepared by co-polymerization of propene oxide and SCCO2. These polymers are not only much cheaper than fluorinated polymers but are more soluble than these materials in SCCO2. The polyether polymers are likely to have widespread applicability, not only as building blocks for stabilizers for SCF polymerization, but also as the basis of... [Pg.482]

Allcock and Smith118 have prepared a series of poly(organophosphazenes) containing siloxane grafts and/or trifluoroethoxy side groups (31-34). Polymers 31 and 32 had critical surface tensions of 16-17 rn N rn 1 and surface layers which were enriched in fluorine. In the case of 32, silicone was not observed at the surface. Polymer 33 had a critical... [Pg.2237]
