Striated muscle is composed of multinucleated muscle fiber cells surrounded by an electrically excitable plasma membrane, the sarcolemma. An individual muscle fiber cell, which may extend the entire length of the muscle, contains a bundle of many myofibrils arranged in parallel, embedded in intracellular fluid termed sarcoplasm. Within this fluid is contained glycogen, the high-energy compounds ATP and phosphocreatine, and the enzymes of glycolysis. [Pg.556]

Whereas in CF4 we can ignore the surface relaxation term, this term is significant for c-C4F8 at 291 K, with the relative weighting becoming increasingly important as we add additional molecular layers, as shown below. This is equivalent to Eq. (3.5.6), with the bulk fluid term set to the spin-rotation relaxation of the bulk gas. It is clear that in such a system, in comparison with CF4 at 294 K, the effect of liquid phase surface relaxation cannot be ignored. [Pg.314]

The amount of oil recovery promoted by an injected fluid is related to its ability to displace the oil it contacts in the reservoir, termed the oil displacement efficiency (ODE), and to the relative amount of the reservoir invaded by the injected fluid, termed the volumetric sweep efficiency (VSE). Total oil recovery may be expressed as ... [Pg.30]

At fixed T, the pure-fluid term can respond only to changes in P, so we can write... [Pg.140]

As flow rate was increased, the thin stream of colored water in the center of the pipe would begin to waver and oscillate back and forth across the pipe. The flow rate at which this occurred would vary according to the pipe diameter. Eventually, as flow continued to be increased, the colored filament would break up altogether (see Fig. 48.3b). The final stage of this flow development where the colored filament breaks up altogether and disappears we nowadays understand to be an illustration of fully developed turbulent flow. The existence of eddy currents randomly distributed across the whole cross-section of the pipe causes effective mixing throughout the fluid as it flows in all but a very narrow layer of stationary fluid, termed "the laminar sublayer," which persists next to the wall of the pipe itself (see Fig. 48.4). [Pg.629]

Conduction can occur within both solids and fluids. The rate of heat transfer depends on a physical properly of the particular solid of fluid, termed its thermal conductivity k, and the temperature gradient across the medium. The thermal conductivity is defined as the measure of the rate of... [Pg.182]

As can be seen in Table 8.8, non-heatset web ink formulation are comprised primarily of a fluid termed ink oil , which contains paraffins, cycloparaffins, isoparaffins, and portions of a petroleum-hased distillate. [Pg.173]

Again, Equation (5.54) can be integrated with the appropriate data or equation of state for z. Using the Lee-Kesler equation of state gives results that include a simple fluid term and a correction term. The form of entropy departure using this equation of state is given in Appendix E. [Pg.295]
