Floor plate

It has two orthogonal axes, the circumferential axis and the longidudinal axis. Four distinct domains called the roof, alar, basal, floor plates are generated along the circumferential axis (A). The neural tube can also divided along the longitudinal axis into the spinal cord and the brain, which can be further divided into five brain vesicles, the telencephalon, the diencephalon, the mesencephalon, the metencephalon and the myelencephalon (B).

The floor plate, which develops along the midline of the vental surface of the neural tube, is the source of Sonic hedgehog, " netrin-1, and other secreted molecules.Some of these participate in axon guidance by which the growing tips (growth cones) of axons are able to connect to the correct "targets. 

Transition to the lower crust corresponds to change of fracturing by faults to the global cataclastic rupture. The lower crust possesses the least resistance to the shear and the detachment of the crust floors becomes possible, see two floor plate tectonics suggested by Lobkovsky (1988).

Sonic hedgehog is not only sufficient, but also is required for the correct differentiation of ventral cell types in the neural tube. Targeted disruption or deletion of the Sonic hedgehog gene in mice [73] and humans [74] leads to defects in the maintenance of the notochord and establishment of the floor plate, with subsequent development of severe malformations of forebrain and cranium characteristic of human holoprosencephaly. Thus, failure of the induction of the optic stalk and other cells in the forebrain of Sonic hedgehog null mouse embryos produces holoprosencephaly and cyclopia [73].
