AP composite propellants without aluminum particles are termed reduced-smoke propellants and are employed in tactical missiles to conceal their launch site and flight trajectory. No visible smoke is formed when the relative humidity of the atmosphere is less than about 40%. However, since high-frequency combustion oscillation tends to occur in the combustion chamber in the absence of solid particles that serve to absorb the oscillatory energy, a mass fraction of 0.01-0.05 of metallic particles is still required for the reduced-smoke propellants. These particles and/or their oxide particles generate thin smoke trails. The white smoke trail includes the white fog generated by the HCl molecules and the condensed water vapor of the humid atmosphere. [Pg.354]

Four basic modes of flight trajectory can be employed (1) semi-ballistic (2) altimeter-controlled terrain following (3) pull-up from behind radar screening terrain followed by inertial and (4) a combination of inertial and terrain following. Lateral deviations in flight profile can also be programmed... [Pg.435]

The results calculated for the flight trajectories of particles with various diameters and moisture contents are shown in Fig. 6.22. The figure indicates that the radial gas flow exhibits certain classification effect for particles with various diameters. However, the moisture content of the particle has almost no effect on the flying distance. These theoretical results illustrate that the arrangement of the upper overflow discharging port is totally unfeasible. [Pg.149]

Male moths make use of the olfactory system and an orientation system to reach the female. Since 1940, when Kennedy conducted one of the first studies in this field, the mechanisms that govern the olfactory search behaviour of a number of insects have been studied. Kennedy discovered that the orientation of the flight trajectory depends on the speed of movement of the ambient visual cues and their angle relative to the moth [46]. [Pg.196]

Calculate the characteristic parameters of the flight trajectory of one of the fragments using Baker s equation for calculating the energy. [Pg.568]

In order to obtain information on the general trends of the kinehcs of particle precipitation from aqueous solutions in the absence of gravity, a simple model system was adopted by Heimann in 1989 based on the hydrolyhc polycondensation of titanium tetraisopropoxide, Ti(iPrO)4, dissolved in water-free toluene with 5% isopropanol added, and injected into an aqueous soluhon. A short period of microgravity (20-30 s) was achieved during a parabolic flight trajectory of an aircraft. [Pg.485]

The cause was a software fault in equipment which was unchanged from Ariane 4, but which was unsuitable for the changed flight trajectory of Ariane 5. There was inadequate analysis and simulation of the systems in Ariane 5. The dual-redundant IRSs used identical hardware and software, with one active and one on hot standby. Because the flight trajectory was different from Ariane 4, the active IRS declared a failure due to a software exception (i.e., an error message). The standby IRS then failed for the same reason. [Pg.31]

However, the recipe for safety on maimed aircraft is impractical for small UAS. First, triple redundancy for all safety-critical systems would impose unacceptable cost, weight, and volume constraints for small aircraft. Second, although transport aircraft typically fly direct routes to deUver their payloads, surveillance aircraft are capable of dynamically re-planning their flight trajectories in response to the evolving mission or to observed data (e.g., the detection of a target to be tracked). [Pg.112]

The barrier model illustrated in Figure 1 has been found useful in determining high-level ATM safety requirements. Each barrier (or layer of protection) removes a certain proportion of the conflicts between aircraft trajectories. The SET hazards represent the conflicts which would exist if airlines and other operators operated their desired flights without any consideration of conflicts. SET stands for shared business trajectoiy and is the SESAR term for the set of published flight trajectories (detailed flight plans) that operators would like to fly. [Pg.107]

The side-stieks are used to operate the aircrafL The pilot inputs are interpreted by the computers that eause the movement of the surfaces (through actuators) in order to get the desired flight trajectory modifications. When the autopilot is engaged, the flight-control computers take their orders from the autopilot computers. Under this aspect, the flight controls consist of five to seven computers and the autopilot of two. [Pg.204]

We take the top of the flow to be the point where the free flight trajectory of a particle ejected normal to the flow with velocity equals the mean free... [Pg.178]

Solution To solve this problem we have to begin with the choice of reference frame. The motion of the missile is subject to a constant acceleration g directed downward. Therefore, the flight trajectory is a plane (two-dimensional). Choose a Cartesian system xOy in such a way that the x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical the flight will occur in this plane. The origin is superposed with the earth... [Pg.9]
