Flexibility index definition

The question now arises as to whether liberties such as those mentioned are to be allowed in the forthcoming version of the Definitive Report. On the one hand, a certain flexibility of nomenclature may sometimes be of considerable usefulness for example, the free choice of the principal function in compounds with various kinds of functions makes it possible to choose a systematic name which emphasizes the type of research carried out with the compounds in question. On the other hand, such liberties form a serious difficulty in the compiling and using of indexes they constitute one of the reasons why different indexes rest on a different basis.
