Flanged joints gaskets

In another incident, on a new plant, two flanged joints leaked an hour after chlorine was introduced. The gaskets were removed and analyzed and were found to be made from titanium although they were stamped Hastelloy, the material specified [5]. 

The molded liners for the inlet head, cylinder section, and conical sections have Integral molded gaskets for sealing at the flanged joints. Molded liners and vulcanized linings are offered in gum rubber, polyurethane, nitrile rubber, butyl. Neoprene , Viton , Hypalon , and other liner materials can be supplied. 

Containment sound design of equipment and piping, to avoid leaks. For example, specifying welded joints in preference to gasketed flanged joints (liable to leak). 

Carbon Steel Bolting. Except where limited by other provisions of this Code, carbon steel bolting may be used with nonmetallic gaskets in flanged joints rated ASME B16.5 Class 300 and lower for bolt metal temperatures at -29°C to 204°C (-20°F to 400°F), inclusive. If these bolts are galvanized, heavy hexagon nuts, threaded to suit, shall be used. 

In assembling flanged joints, the gasket shall be uniformly compressed to the proper design loading. 

Flanged connections used in propane systems shall have gaskets that are compatible with propane and also have a melting point of greater than 816°C (1500°F) [3.14]. Whenever flanged joints are opened in propane systems, the gasket is to be replaced.
