Flame polishing

A short stem, flame-polished funnel of diameter ca. 12.5 cm, free of any scratches or broken edges, was used to prevent spontaneous decomposition of diazomethane. [Pg.226]

Use a pipet puller to prepare glass transfer pipets so that they are 2-3 cm long with a 120-180 pm diameter, and flame polish the end. Fill the pipet with a small amount of light paraffin oil, then an air bubble, then M2, followed by another air bubble. Fill the pipet with 5-7 eggs, followed by another air bubble and a small amount of M2. [Pg.248]

Special arrangements must be made if the liquid is to be transferred and kept under vacuum. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to obtain the Raman spectrum of a liquid under vacuum is to distill the liquid into a small glass tube, usually about 3 mm (or less) inner diameter, whose lower end is sealed and flame-polished. The tube is placed vertically and the laser beam directed into the lower end, passing vertically through the tube. A spherical mirror is placed behind the tube to collect the maximum amount of the Raman radiation. A lens system in front focuses the total Raman radiation on the entrance slit of the monochromator. [Pg.216]

A technique similar to flame polishing can be used to treat certain plastic surfaces before coating or adhesives bonding. See flame treatment surface treatment. [Pg.199]

Flame Polishing n A method of finishing a plastic article, particularly a just formed extrudate, in which a carefully controlled flame or stream of hot gas is directed at the surface, melting a thin skin of resin that, when quenched, has a high gloss. [Pg.308]
