While Figure 3.1 implies that there is a single variable to quantify fire growth, the reality is that there are many different variables. The variable or variables of interest depend on the objective of the system under design. [Pg.45]

Crystallizers are made more flexible by the introduction of selective removal devices that alter the resideiMe time distribution of materials flowing from the crystallizer. The functions of classified removal are best described in terms of idealized models of clear-liqaor advance, classified-fines removal, and classified-product removal. Clear-liquor advance is the removal of mother liquor from the crystallizer without simultaneous removal of crystals. The effects of implementing this removal function are described in Section 11.5-2. The primary objective of fines removal is preferential withdrawal from the crystallizer of crystals whose size is below some specified value with fire withdrawal, dissolution, and returo of the solution to the crystallizer, the growth of la er crystals is enhanced.
