Theoretical studies (30) comparing the abihty to dewater compressible sohds by sedimenting and filtering centrifuges to pressure filters, have shown that at high G levels, scroU decanters produce drier cakes than pressure filtration. [Pg.412]

The leached solids must be separated from the extract by settling and decantation or by external filters, centrifuges, or thickeners, all of which are treated elsewhere in Sec. 18. The difficulty of solids-extract separation and the fact that a batch stirred tank provides only a single equilibrium stage are its major disadvantages. [Pg.1675]

Sedimenting and Filtering Centrifuges Under centrifugal force, the sohd phase assumed to be denser than the hquid phase set-... [Pg.1725]

In a filtering centrifuge, separating sohds from liquid does not require a density difference between the two phases. Should a density difference exist between the two phases, sedimentation is usually at a much more rapid rate compared to filtration. In both cases, the solid and liquid phases move toward the bowl under centrifugal force. The sohds are retained by the filter medium, while the liqmd flows through the cake solids and the filter. This is illustrated in Fig. 18-138/ . [Pg.1725]

Tneory of Centrifugal Filtration Theoretical prechc tions of the behavior of sohd-hquid mixtures in a filtering centrifuge are more (difficult compared to pressure and gravity filtration. The area of flow and driving force are both proportional to the radius, and the specific... [Pg.1739]

Starch is a widely distributed material which occurs in roots, seeds, and fruits of plants. For commercial use, com is the principal source, though wheat and potatoes are also used. Starch is extracted by grinding with water, filtering, centrifuging, and drying, a process which yields starch in a granular form. [Pg.19]

Adsorption measurements were made by batch technique at room temperature (25 3°C). Known amounts of tannin resin were placed in 250 mL erlenmeyer flasks containing 100 mL of metal ion solution of known concentration and were stirred for a given time period. The solutions were then filtered, centrifuged and the concentrations of metal ions were measured by AAS. The difference in the metal ion (Pb + and Ztf+) content before and after adsorption represented the amount of Pb and Zn adsorbed by new resin. [Pg.256]
