Calendered PE sheet (Crinothene) was used for lampshades. Winothene was a low molecular weight PE made for wax applications. Halothene was a chlorinated PE. None of these proved a growth driver for the PE business. However, a major application for PE was found once ICl Plastics started its first 122 cm (48") film extruder. Today, extmded film (blown film, cast film, extrusion coating) is the major process/application across the main types of PE. [Pg.18]

The basic principle is somewhat similar to cast film extrusion but the flow of the polymer is obtained by dissolving it in a solvent instead of heating it during mechanical shearing in an extruder. [Pg.737]

Cast film extrusion of polyolefins has been developed to obtain flexible films with a high level of transparency by freezing the amorphous polymer structure of the melt on a chill roll. Cast films are mono-oriented in extrusion direction. [Pg.119]

Cast film extrusion. In a cast film extrusion process, a thin film is extruded through a slit onto a chilled, highly polished, turning roll where it is quenched from one side. The speed of the roller controls the draw ratio and final film thickness. The film is then sent to a second roller for cooling of the other side. Finally, the film passes through a system of rollers and is wound onto a roll. A typical film casting process is depicted in Figs. 3.53... [Pg.151]

In cast film extrusion, the molten PLA is extruded through a dye and successively rolled. The production of PLA films or sheets by this processing method is veiy similar, with the only difference being the thickness of the resulting material. Typically films are in the order of less than 70 pm whereas sheets have thicknesses higher than 0.25 mm. % using the same technique, PLA is often co-extruded along with other polymers to form... [Pg.322]

Cast film extrusion See chill roll extrusion. [Pg.164]

Another process for producing plastic films is flat, or cast, film extrusion. In this process the extruder pumps molten resin through a flat film or sheet die. The melt leaves the die in the form of a wide film, or sheet. This is typically fed into a chill-roll assembly which stretches and cools the film. After the film passes through the rolls, the film is wound up on a roll. [Pg.374]

Both blown and cast film extrusion operations use special resin formulations, which include a number of additives to impart various characteristics to the film. Among the most important additives are materials to control slip and dcCTcase blocking tendencies. Slip is defined as the tendency of the film to slide on itself and is related to the material s coefficient of friction. Blocking is the tendency of a tightly wound roll of film to stick to itself and form a solid block of plastic that cannot be easily nnwound. [Pg.176]

Non-contact IR thermometers are used in a large number of extrusion operations blown film, cast film, biaxially oriented film, sheet, extrusion coating, etc. In some IR thermometers, an entire surface can be scanned and isotherms can be determined. With additional instrumentation, quantitative information on the temperature distribution can be obtained [5]. Portable infrared thermometers can be used to spot check the process, maintain equipment, and do general plant maintenance they are also very useful tools in troubleshooting. [Pg.99]

The common methods of processing LDPE are blown and cast film extrusion and coextrusion, extrusion coating, blow molding, injection molding, rotomolding, and wire extrusion. Explanations for these processes can he found in other articles in the Encyclopedia. [Pg.2886]
