Fillings, alginates

Alginates are used as thickeners in fat substitutes, pet food, stuffed olives, onion rings, low-fat sauces and spreads, and pie fillings. [Pg.143]

Fig. 10.16 Carbon nanotubes filled with quantum dots in a sodium alginate carrier solvent. The alginate encloses the dots into the tubes by sealing the tube ends. A large majority of excess alginate around the tubes was removed by repeated washing (Reprinted from Nadarajan et al., 2007. With permission from Elsevier) (See Color Plates)... [Pg.250]

Figure 1.30. Evolution of the water phase viscosity rjc as a function of the shear rate and alginate concentration (filled symbols). For the sake of comparison, the viscosity rja of the inverted emulsion at 0, = 75 wt% is reported in the same graph (open symbols). (Adapted from [162].)... Figure 1.30. Agar - The standard alginate (5%) in water formulation for filling Petri dishes. This material is a gel or solid resin in water material to represent a nonpoly-meric material through which nutrients diffuse to colonize bacteria. [Pg.63]

C. Alginate "Snakes" This makes an excellent demonstration on an overhead projector. Fill a crystallizing dish or beaker to a depth of Vi to 3A inch with 2% Ca(N03)2 solution. Introduce a stream of 2% sodium alginate solution directly into the- Ca2+ solution using a pipet. You should be able to cause the formation of a long strand of gel (a snake ). For the most part, the properties of the strands should be the same as those of the beads that you explored above. To test the physical properties of your snakes, wash them in fresh water and let them dry. As they are drying, periodically test their strength and note their appearance. [Pg.242]

Povidone can also be used as a hydrophilic component or pore former in preparations that contain sustained-release auxiliaries like polyvinyl acetate, cellulose derivatives like HPMC [490, 509, 660], alginate [461], cetylacohol [600], polylactic acid [5o6],Gelucire [510],polyvinyl alcohol [522],ceresine wax [523], stearic acid [606] or methacrylate copolymers [491] to control or regulate the release of active substances, as binders and/or sometimes as plasticizers. They can also be extruded together with the active substance in melted stearyl alcohol and filled into hard gelatin capsules to achieve the same effect [471]. Ocular delivery systems are also described [598]. [Pg.113]
