Modern ab initio calculations daily confirm the usefulness of the orbital-based quantal perspective as a basis for predicting complex chemical phenomena. In this framework the fundamental descriptors of the orbital filling sequence are the... [Pg.136]

The periodic table in block form, showing the filling sequence of the atomic orbitals. Filling proceeds from left to right across each row and from the right end of each row to the left end of the succeeding row. [Pg.518]

Fortunately, most electron configurations follow the normal filling sequence. Much of the data that enabled scientists to understand electron configurations came from a branch of science barely touched upon so far. That science is spectroscopy, and it has played a key role in understanding how electrons behave in atoms. [Pg.53]

The /block includes all the inner transition elements. Atoms of /block elements have filled s orbitals in the outer energy levels, as well as filled or partially filled 4/and 5/orbitals. In general, the notation for the orbital filling sequence is ns, followed by (n - 2)/, followed by (n - l]d, followed by (for period 6 elements) np. However, there are many exceptions that make it difficult to predict electron configurations. Because there are seven/orbitals, with a maximum of fourteen electrons, the /block spans fourteen groups. [Pg.149]

A typical network effect is illustrated in Fig. 1.15 in the case of three pores of different size. During adsorption the smallest pores are filled first and the largest pores last, resulting in the filling sequence A, B and C. The vapor needed to fill remote pores can be transported either through the liquid or vapor phase. During the desorption process, the order in which the liquid nitrogen would become unstable is C, B and A, i.e. the reverse. [Pg.23]

Some machines, e.g., Bosch GKF, Index, Impressa and Zanasi, are called intermittent motion machines because they exhibit an interrupted filling sequence. That is, indexing turntables must stop at specific stations to execute the various operations described above. Continuous motion machines, e.g., MG2 and Matic, execute these functions in a continuous cycle. Eliminating the need to decelerate and accelerate from one station to the next makes possible higher machine speeds with the continuous motion machines (24). [Pg.418]

A typical barrier-island system can be divided into three depositional environments (barrier beach, lagoonal/bay, and tidal channel -delta complex) each of which contains a number of smaller subenvironments (2). This work focused on a typical bay-fill sequence in which bay sediments are overlain by tidal flat deposits... [Pg.209]

Electron configurations get more complicated in atoms with higher atomic numbers. Which orbitals the outermost electrons fill first is sometimes less than straightforward. In some cases, for instance, spin considerations can override the normal orbital filling sequence. Fortunately, though, the electron configurations of most... [Pg.32]

Thus it appeared that the fourth shell started to be filled, even before the third shell had been completely filled. Therefore, the electronic configuration of potassium (K, Z = 19) was not ls 2s 3s 3p 3d as expected, but ls 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s. In other words, the simple (n, /) rule, according to which the orbitals are filled in order of increasing n (and I for the same value of n), failed to construct the exact filling sequence. Consequently, the correct order had to be deduced in a semi-empirical way (i.e., with the aid of spectroscopic experiments). Only then could one derive the exact electronic configurations of the elements. But in 1936, Madelung... [Pg.82]

TABLE 1 Application of the empirical (n + I, n) rule (Madelung rule) according to which the orbitals in neutral atoms are filled in order of increasing n + I, and n for fixed n + 1. The exact filling sequence is obtained by reading the quantum map from left to right, and top to bottom... [Pg.83]

Horiba Autoreservoir, available for the LA-910 and LA-920, is a three-chamber tank with a built-in pump. The unit supplies liquid to the analyzer in response to commands. Concentrated surfactant solutions can be added to two of the tanks and then automatically diluted during the fill sequence. This automates the supply of dispersant solution for fill, sample dilution and rinses. [Pg.557]

The electron states of elements are built up regularly until Ar (Z = 18) is reached with states Is, 2s 2p , 3s 3p , In K (Z = 19) the next electron, instead of occupying state 3d , occupies the first state in the next shell (n = 4), 4s followed by 4s for Ca. The next electron then occupies the 3d level (Sc). The energy of 4s and 3d levels is therefore nearly the same, presumably because of screening of the nuclear potential by other electrons. The filling sequence can be schematically written ... [Pg.103]

Irregular flow and pressure during the mold-filling sequence can cause waviness, dry patches and overloading. Since many advanced RTM resins are solid or highly viscous at room temperature (and therefore all machine hardware must be thoroughly heated), a compact injection machine needs to have custom-fitted heated mantles on the reservoirs, pumps, fittings and mixers to eliminate any cold spots. [Pg.309]

An orbital diagram (shown as circles) is the notation used to show the number of electrons in each subshell. Each subshell is labeled with its subshell notation, s, p, d, or f. An orbital diagram also makes it easy to see the sequence of how subshells are filled. If you use small circles to stand for a subshell, then the orbital diagram can be used to find the orbital configuration of nearly every element. Figure 6.2 shows the order of an orbital filling sequence. [Pg.88]

A glass for a wristwatch displayed convergence points opposite the runner, i.e., very visible joint lines. It was possible to establish clearly, after a filling sequence with this mould, that no uniform flow front was formed. [Pg.205]
