Fiber pencil A rod-like assemblage of fibers in close packed parallel orientation of generally uniform diameter that can be fiberized readily. [Pg.88]

Eyebrow pencils are used to outline the brow, especially after plucking of undesirable fibers. They are commonly prepared by stick mol ding. Eyebrow pencils are generally harder than eyeliner pencils. Like other pencils, the extmded mass is normally encased in wood. A smoke pencil should be used to check for ingress of air. The furnace can be correctly balanced by adjusting the body flow of N2 at the furnace inlet end to such a level that, when looking down into the furnace muffle, the atmosphere is not entirely clear but, at the same time, smoke is not forced out from the outlet end. It is essential to maintain a slight cloudy atmosphere, as this permits the correct concentration of HCN to build up within the furnace, significantly improving the carbon fiber strength. [Pg.441]

Quarles [1988] used pencil lead breaks on wood blocks of various species to study the effects that grain angle and moisture content might have on AE event rates. The conclusion was that there were significant differences between species, but only minor differences in the moisture content effects within species. Both Quarles [1990] and Sakui [1990] confirmed that AE signal attenuation was relatively constant up to fiber saturation point (the moisture content corresponding to saturated cell walls, but no water in the cell cavity). At moisture contents above fiber saturation point much more significant attenuation was observed. [Pg.315]

One of the earliest CNT-tipped biological sensor reported was an SWCNT-coated carbon fiber nanoelectrode (100-300 nm tip diameter, as shown in Figure 7.2b). Using cyclic voltammetry, the CNT-tipped electrode could detect dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine at concentrations on an order of magnitude lower than noncoated probes. The demonstration was significant because the dimensions of the CNT-tipped probe would make it possible to study the functions of living cells and tissue with a minimal level of intrusion. Additionally, the pencil-like shape of the probe readily fits the standard ceU physiology equipment and facilitated its use. [Pg.228]
