Fiber, dietary diverticular disease

A resurgence of interest in dietary fiber has been stimulated by epidemiological evidence of differences in colonic disease patterns between cultures with diets containing large quantities of fiber, and Western cultures having more highly refined diets. Many African countries, for example, are relatively free of diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, polyps, and cancer of the colon Whereas most interest has focused on the beneficial role of dietary fiber, there is also concern that high fiber diets may cause disturbances in the absorption of nutrients such as minerals (see Mineral Nutrients) and vitamins. 

Dietary fiber is commonly used for the treatment of various maladies of the gastrointestinal tract, such as constipation, diverticular disease, irritable bowel... 

Dietary fiber is used to prevent and treat diverticular disease. This disease occurs in the human colon and involves outpouchings (divcrticuli) where small regions of the gut mucosa slip in between belts of muscle and extend into the body (Figure 3.6). he belts of muscle constitute a layer in the wall of the large intestines.

High fiber diets administered to patients suffering from diverticular disease did not lower hemoglobin concentrations over a six month period (Brodribb and Humphreys/ 42) Prolonged consumption of vegetar ian diets which are inherently rich in dietary fiber did not impair iron metabolism as judged by hematologic criteria (48,58).
