Fermentation in the stomach

The mixture of o- and p-phenolsulphonic acids formed by sulphonating phenol, is used as a disinfectant under the name aseptol the sodium salts of the acids are used as a remedy for the form of indigestion which results from a certain kind of fermentation in the stomach. 

As a rule, when quinolones are administered orally, their absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is rapid and almost complete, but food in the stomach delays their absorption. In unweaned calves, fluoroquinolones are often given in the milk replacer, but oral bioavailability is slightly reduced compared with the oral drench (139). On tire other hand, fermentation in the rumen of mature ruminants precludes the oral use of fluoroquinolones. Injectable solutions are also available for systemic therapy of large animals and turkeys.

Aminopenicillanic acid (6 APS) is an important precursor for the organic synthesis of new P. The compound itself has no antibiotic activity it is isolated as a fermentation product from cultures of Pen-cillium chrysogenum, or prepared by the enzymatic hydrolysis of benzylpenicillin. Instead of Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy can be used in cases of infrared-active transition, for example, for CO, CO2, NO, and CH4. With cavity ring-down spectroscopy a high sensitivity can be reached and spurious molecular concentrations resulting from fermentation processes in the stomach can still be detected [15.152].
