Feminist critiques

The interpretation of truth and knowledge as derived from purposeful reflection on experience and as anchored in utility has been significantly updated by two recent movements. One is the development of the epistemological consequences of the feminist movement to challenge the privileges associated with certain political, sociocultural, or pedagogical structures (Brickhouse 2001). Like Stephens and Kennedy before him, Talty takes as his primary objective the refutation of a troubling black feminist critique, and Davis again serves as the representative foil. Better said, it is the disposition of the analysis that dismays Talty, what are taken to be overtones of pessimism toward the emotional capacities of whites in general and white men in particular. The recent relationships of Western zoos to postcolonial and feminist critiques (Anderson, 1995 Harpley, 1992 Harpley Simpson-Housley, 1998 Whatmore, 2002) are recognized, but the larger ancient relationship of humans, nature and zoos is considerable. That historical and the contemporary are both in need of more study and potentially even further applications in zoos in the future is widely recognized.

Allen,/erenzio/i, 162,164-65. Although he was not sympathetic to the feminist critique, Robert P. Carroll recognized the ideological and pornographic nature of Jeremiah s invective and the crudeness of his euphemisms. Carroll s commentary on Jeremiah in the Old Testament Library (Philadelphia Westminster Press, 1986) has been replaced by Allen s it has been reprinted by Sheffield Phoenix Press (2 volumes, 2006).
