It is a white or faindy yellowish white crystalline powder, ododess and stable in air, and practically insoluble in water one gram is soluble in 15 mT, alcohol and 100 mL diethyl ether. Phenolphthalein may be prepared by mixing phenol, phthalic anhydride, and sulfuric acid, and heating at 120°C for 10—12 h. Irritant agents used in the treatment of constipation include cascara sagrada, castor oil, senna, rhubarb, phenolphthalein, and acetphenolisatin. Phenolphthalein is a constituent of many over-the-counter preparations, including Corrected , Ex-Lax , and Feen-A-Mint .
