Fatty acids and lipids biosynthesis

The type and amount of any unsaturated fatty acid found in lipids must be regulated by integrated control mechanisms directed both towards unsaturated fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis. The types and amounts of unsaturated fatty acids produced must be determined both by the number of enzymes involved in this process and the substrate specificity of these enzymes In addition those factors which influence enzyme activity must also regulate the rate at which unsaturated fatty acids are produced The results presented below summarize the studies carried out in our laboratory in an attempt to further determine what regulates unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. 

A sensitive method has been developed for the analysis of long-chain acyl intermediates of fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis that occur covalently bound to either ACP or CoA. The method is based on aminolysis of the sample with n-butylamine... 

Further research activities have included the partial characterization of the plant HMG-CoA reductase and the study of the interrelationship between the cytoplasmic and organelle me-valonate pathways. He has also showed that mitochondrial biomembranes of most plants simultaneously contain two or more homoiogues of ubiquinones as electron carriers. More recently his research has been concerned with the de novo fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis as affected by xenobiotics. Here Hartmut LIchtenthaier has presented evidence that the plastidic acetyl-CoA carboxylase is the target for various classes of new herbicides.
