The association of Madeira with the United States is intimate. The Declaration of Independence, on 4th July 1776, was toasted by George Washington with a chalice of Madeira wine. It was the wine preferred by kings, emperors, and statesmen and served during the banquets of European Courts. Thomas Jefferson, and all the other "Founding Fathers," greatly appreciated the most exquisite wines of the time, but preferred Madeira over all. [Pg.210]

Element 101 is named Mendelevium in honor of the great Russian chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev. The youngest of seventeen children, he was born in Tobolslca where his grandfather published the first newspaper in Siberia and his father ivaj the high school principal. Dmitri received his early education from a political exile, but when his father died, his mother traveled west in search of better educational opportunities for Dmitri. [Pg.107]

Don Francisco went back to Granada to spend his final years. There, he still kept an interest in a fraction of his father s land which he had inherited. In 1981, his health visibly declined, and cancer of the intestines was diagnosed. He had to sutler two major operations which were of no avail, and finally he accepted his fate with great fortitude and dignity. Thomas Hancock (1785-1865) is designated the father of the rubber industry and to him Great Britain is indebted for the honour of being the first country to manufacture rubber successfully as a large-scale project. His first major discovery, in 1819, was the process of masticating and mixing raw rubber. His subsequent claim, in his Personal Narrative published in 1857, that this was unquestionably the origin and commencement of the India-rubber manufacture, properly so called , has been amply verified since. [Pg.32]
