What will happen if we mix A, B, P, and Q together There s some gray area here in that the answer depends somewhat on what we mean by happen. First, it depends on direction. A more appropriate way to ask the question is, Will the reaction happen in the direction written, that is, left to right Second, it depends on the actual concentrations of A, B, P, and Q that you start with. Third, it really depends on the relationship between the initial concentrations of A, B, P, and Q and the equilibrium concentrations that will exist when the reaction finally comes to equilibrium. Finally, when A, B, P, and Q are mixed, they will take off toward the equilibrium position, whatever that is, but thermodynamics doesn t tell you how long it might take for the reaction to actually get to equilibrium. The How fasti is kinetics. So the real answer is that when we mix A, B, P, and Q, the reaction will happen in the direction that takes you to equilibrium. When the reaction is actually at equilibrium, the concentrations of A, B, P, and Q will be equal to their equilibrium concentrations. [Pg.275]

The main question in perceptual coding is What amount of noise can be introduced to the signal without being audible Answers to this question are derived from psychoacoustics. Psychoacoustics describes the relationship between acoustic events and the resulting auditory perceptions [Zwicker and Feldtkeller, 1967], [Zwicker and Fasti, 1990], [Fletcher, 1940],... [Pg.37]

The few basic facts about psychoacoustics given here are needed to understand the description of psychoacoustic models below. More about psychoacoustics can be found in John Beerend s chapter on perceptual measurement in this book and in [Zwicker and Fasti, 1990] and other books on psychoacoustics (e.g. [Moore, 1997]). [Pg.37]

Although common knowledge has it that fixed phase relations do not influence the perception of timbre [Zwicker and Fasti, 1990, Zwicker, 1982], this is not true for time-varying phases disturbing phase relations is known to introduce buzziness or reverberation in the modified signal [McAulay and Quatieri, 1986b], In Eq. (7.26), phase relations are controlled through the terms 0,(/). Therefore, an ideal shape-invariant time-scale modification would be... [Pg.168]

Food systems are often not composed of one type of constituent but of a mixture thereof Usually one does not operate at conditions where all constituents mix homogeneously, and even if that were the case, the formulation window turns out to be rather narrow (e.g., the case of Fastis, an anise-holding drink (Grillo 2003)). In most cases one finds that demixing occurs, leading to a situation of each constituent forming its own phase separated from the other phases by a so-called interface. [Pg.145]
