Not surprisingly, costs are several times higher than conventional wells. Nevertheless, overall project economics may favour ERD over other development options. For example, BP developed the offshore part of the Wytch Farm Oilfield (which is located under Poole Harbour in Dorset, UK) from an onshore location. The wells targeted the reservoir at a vertical depth of 1,500 meters with a lateral displacement of over 8,000 meters (Fig. 3.20). The alternative was to build a drilling location on an artificial island in Poole Bay. ERD probably saved a considerable amount of money and advanced first oil by several years.

Once oil and gas have been processed the products have to be evacuated from the site. Stabilised crude is normally stored in tank farms at a distribution terminal which may involve an extended journey by pipeline. At a distribution terminal, crude is stored prior to further pipeline distribution or loading for shipment by sea (Figure 10.28). 

In recent years, concentrated phosphoric acids, which may contain as much as 70% to 75% P2O5 content, have become of great importance to agriculture and farm production. World-wide demand for fertilizers has caused record phosphate production. Phosphates are used in the production of special glasses, such as those used for sodium lamps. 

These kinds of stores carry hobby/craft supplies, gimmicky science fair projects, ant farms and a low assortment of basic scienceware products such as beakers, thermometers, scales, rubber stoppers and most of the basic chemicals such as acids, bases and solvents. These places are listed in the chemicals section of any big city s yellow pages and are relatively safe places to get most of the basic lab necessities. The drawback is that they are really expensive and don t sell very large quantities of any chemical. It is possible to have these places special order a needed chemical as long as it s not a controlled chemical.
