However, there may be more than one metabolic pathway for a particular chemical one or more being detoxication pathways, another pathway producing a toxic metabolite. Therefore, the balance between these becomes crucial and the factors, which affect this balance very important. 

Levels of conjugating enzymes, such as glutathione transferases, are also known to be influenced by gender and species differences as well as by drugs and other environmental factors. All of these factors will in turn affect the detoxication process.
